The
UAMS AHEC-SW Residency Program is located in Texarkana,
Arkansas, and uses the facilities and professionals of the area for it's
breadth of learning. Our
Family Medicine Residency was developed
and implemented in 1993. It was the culmination of a community support
base that includes over 100 physicians, two major medical centers, and a
variety of agencies within the bi-state city of Texarkana. The cities of
Texarkana sit on the state line of Arkansas and Texas, located 70 miles
northwest of Shreveport, LA, 180 miles east of Dallas, and 140 miles
southwest of Little Rock, AR.
Residents rotate in a variety of diverse settings and utilize both
hospitals to the fullest extent, thereby maximizing all opportunities
the community has to offer. The Residency Program is administered by the
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
The Program Director utilizes assistance from faculty members,
residents, and an advisory board, in the implementation and direction of
the residency.
Residents are chosen for their independence and spirit to work within a
private setting at a high pace and intense level. The admission service,
including two hospitals, is varied and residents have unlimited
admission privileges. A spirit of teamwork is essential for the success
of the program and residents participate in a number of weekly
conferences, journal clubs and residents’ meetings.
New residents are required to spend one month in orientation. This month
is designed to solidify the relationships between the residents and to
provide ample time for orientation to the practice of medicine in the
Texarkana area.
